The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will.     两颗星的基础上给山田老爷子对电影的执着与个人情感的坚持加一星,故事本身透露着很多过时甚至守旧的无奈与自我,不过导演本身想外放的情感还是值得期待,毕竟看一部少一部了。

    跟小说角度不同,结尾不同,整个故事也变成了男主的一个幻想。电影里男主被送到了奥地利的疯人院,象棋书内的照片也似乎就是那个象棋冠军,一切都可能是男主臆想出来的,可见纳粹对一个精神健全性格开朗拥有教养的一个人的精神与身体的冷酷摧残。小说很短,可以找来看看,做做比较。我更喜欢小说。象棋冠军利用并诱使男主的精神崩溃,以及男主人公最后又渐渐恢复了彬彬有礼,让人不寒而栗。

    没有比山田洋次更适合给松竹拍百年纪念电影的人了。回忆片段十分温柔,是电影全盛时期的暖光。山田洋次可能不是开宗立派的大师,缺少“作者性”,但在情节剧方面,无人能出其右

    会觉得原著最精彩的部分全遭到削减,无论是B在象棋之外克制而不引人注目的表现,还是最后对弈时双方的博弈(C对B的把握和B对自己的)。全部添加片段都令人尴尬地背离原作内核,当然可以说本片只是基于原著概念的新创作,但这只能说是个本质相当cliché的恐怖纳粹统治下的精神分析抓马,导演自己可能也是不拿着实物就没法下盲棋的类型吧。演员已经很尽力了,加一星。不过同去的意大利小妹妹看得还挺高兴的…

    影视民工许多地方都有共鸣(懂自懂🥲)其实反而觉得两段故事的衔接这样做才好,不必批评故事老套幼稚,写的就是那些自我怀疑没有才华的时刻,这也是片子与作者的关系,对于90岁的山田洋次来说,比起精雕细琢,已经更在意快乐看电影本身。
